Chestnut Shatters Cheese Sandwich Record

Joey Chestnut downed 47 grilled cheese sandwiches in 10 minutes to demolish the previous world record of 36.5 and win the World Grilled Cheese-Eating Contest.

Despite the five-second dunking rule and the 100-plus degree temperature at the outside event in Las Vegas, Chestnut easily plowed through the grilled cheese sandwiches. Sonya Thomas and Patrick Bertoletti tied for second by eating 37 grilled cheese sandwiches apiece, both enough to top the previous world record.

Eater X Tim Janus was not at the table to defend his title. As reigning champion, he competed against against Gear Gudmundson, offensive line/defensive line for the AFL's New York Dragons. Januseasily downed 18 grilled cheese sandwiches if five minutes to beat Gudmundson, who ate six.

The event was part of the Arena Football League's Arena Bowl XX weekend.

Mike Justice won the amateur contest. He did not win the $100,000 for breaking the world record.
