MLE Makes Spike New Home of Competitive Eating

It appears that fans of Takeru Kobayashi, Joey Chestnut, Sonya Thomas, Patrick Bertoletti and Eater X will now have to turn to SpikeTV to get their competitive eating fix.

In a deal that some have labelled "Ultimate Biting," Major League Eating and the IFOCE have announced that they will produce four MLE specials for Spike in 2007.

The series will kick off with the St. Patrick’s Day ChowDown in Savannah, Georgia, during the city’s world-renowned St. Patrick’s Day celebration, which attracts more than 200,000 revelers each year. The SPD ChowDown will air on Spike on March 17th at 7pm EST.

“Guys are hungry for new and exciting sports on television that satisfy the craving for gut-busting action,” said Kevin Kay, General Manager, Spike TV.

“Spike is the perfect home for the fast-growing sport of competitive eating and we are honored to work with Spike to expand this entertainment product,” said George Shea of MLE and Shea Baer Productions, which is producing the programming. “The Spike audience and the competitive eating audience are one and the same.”

Spike TV is available in 91 million homes and is a division of MTV Networks, a division of Viacom International Inc. Major League Eating was developed by the International Federation of Competitive eating, which was founded in 1997 and continues to act as governing body for the sport.
