Oliver to Defend Tamales-eating Title

Levi Oliver is currently odds-on favorite to win the Berryhill Baja Grill World Tamales-Eating Contest on May 6, 2006. At this point, Oliver's skill and experience with tamales (he is reigning tamales-eating champion)places him on top with handicappers. But this might change.

The event, which reportedly honors Cinco de Mayo, a celebration held the day before the contest, will be 12 minutes long and will feature a total of $2,500 in prizes.

Levi Oliver, known as “The Prophet” because he often stares trance-like into the distance while eating, is a resident of Austin, Texas, and recently has been the subject of a RunTex promotion that seeks to achieve weight loss through goal-oriented training (Levi has been preparing to run road races).

The World Tamales-Eating Contest will attempt to raise money for charity. In a rare move, competitors will pay an entry fee of $25 that will be dedicated, along with donations from Berryhill Baja Grill and the International Federation of Competitive Eating, to The Mercy Foundation, which supports the House of Mercy in Monterrey, Mexico. The contest will be held at the Berryhill Baja Grill at 1 PM at 702 East 11th Street in Houston, TX.
